Main Attractions Of A 3Days
Masai Mara Tours Safaris
The masai mara is world famous for its greatest
wildebeest migration which involves the movement of more than 1.5 wildebeests,
zebras and gazelles moving from the Serengeti plains into masai mara in a
cyclic north west movement. The migration follows the cyclic rainfall patterns
in the masai mara ecosystem and the pastures that grow after the rains. This is
by far the biggest event of every year from July to October where you can see
the moving mass of animals cross the plains as they eat all the grass in their
wake.
The wildebeest masses start out in the Serengeti
plains after the February wildebeest calving season. After the April rains, the
grass starts to dry out and the rivers become dry beds. By June, every thing in
sight is an unsightly dry and whittled grass which is not attractive to the
animals. Suddenly, in July the clouds start to gather further north in the mau
hills and the lighting and thunder in the distance triggers the migration. The
animals can tell there is rain up north and where there is rain fresh pasture
is never too far behind. Slowly, they start to congregate in small groups at
first and then into huge populations. The wildebeest migration starts with leisurely
treks by the wildebeest and at some point breaks into an all out sprints across
the plains, into river beds and up the drying river banks.
Mara River Crossing Stampede
By the time the wildebeest make it into Masai
mara, they are in their millions and no matter how much the big cats eat, they
hardly make a dent on their populations. Onward they march while bleating and
gazing out for any signs of danger. Finally, they get to the infamous mara
river crossing. By this time the rains in the north have filled the mara river
to the brim and the waters are fast and furious. The wildebeests have to cross
this river, not once but twice as they move in an all too familiar route. It is
here that the drama of the great wildebeest migration unfolds to views
unimaginable.
Thousands of the animals crowd on the river
bank and they bleat with trepidation and fear of the obvious dangers lurking in
the waters. To the 18ft nile crocodiles,
the season of plenty has arrived and at last they can satiate their year-long
fast. The crocs can be seen as huge boulder like scraggy debris lying in wait
in the river. By now, the wildebeests are building in pressure along the banks
as the front row animals refuse to move into the water and hold back the
profile. At some point, one wildebeest will make the death defying leap into
the water and the rest of them will follow in a frantic frenzy as they try to
outrun the crocodiles across the water.
The Carnage on the
River
Sometimes they will have a clear exit on the
opposite river bank but at times, they miscalculate and face a 90 degrees vertical
wall with a wedge shaped exit that can only fit 1 animal at a time. In their
hundreds they rush for these exits and in their hundreds their perish from the
stampede. Others will get stuck on the now too thick mud from the trampling and
will be left hardly able to move their heads as they slowly die out of
exhaustion. Thousands of the wildebeest perish at the river crossing that at
some point the floating bodies create a temporary dam.
Nothing will stop the annual wildebeest
migration as the number that perishes is too small to make an impact on the
more than 1 million wildebeests and hundred thousands of zebras. In any case, the calving season sees more
than 250,000 calves born in Serengeti plains.
Such is the drama in the masai mara during the
great wildebeest migration that it triggers another form of human migration
with more than 350,000 tourists visiting the park in the short 3 months to see
this spectacle. It’s simply the biggest animal migration in the world. The
masai mara great wildebeest migration!
